Chelsea Sloan is the founder of Uptown Cheapskate, a teen/young adult fashion exchange franchise. Sloan opened the first Uptown Cheapskate location in Salt Lake City, Utah with her brother, Scott Sloan, in 2009.

Sloan and her brother started Uptown Cheapskate because they saw a need for a store that provided teenagers and 20-somethings a place to go to sell their slightly used fashion items and buy those of others. And they saw the need for those stores to be nicer than the run-of-the-mill thrift shop experience. “Our stores look like the mall,” Sloan said.

After just eight months in operation and turning a profit, Sloan franchised the trendy consignment store and has since expanded to 20 locations in 12 states. She’s planning 16 new stores in the next year and wants to have 101 stores in all by 2016 and she said she had already hired the staff needed to expand to 50.
